Life of Francisco Arcellana

  Francisco "Franz" Arcellana (September 6, 1916 – August 1, 2002) was a distinguished Filipino writer, poet, essayist, critic, journalist, and teacher. Recognized as one of the pioneers of modern Filipino short stories in English, he helped shape Philippine literature through his unique style and innovation.  Born in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Arcellana was the fourth of 18 children. He showed early promise in writing, with his first works published while still in high school. He pursued higher education at the University of the Philippines (UP), where he developed his craft under the guidance of noted professors and fellow writers. Though he originally studied pre-medicine, his passion for literature led him to fully embrace writing.
